variable site or region
(1) A site or region within the DNA that is occupied by different nucleotides among the sequences under comparison. (2) Strictly, a site or region within the DNA that can vary with time.
 
variant repetition
The existence of repeated products of gene duplication that have diverged from each other since the duplication event.
 
viability
A fitness component. The probability that an individual of a given genotype survives from conception to reproductive age.
 
virion
A virus particle.
 
virus
A small parasite that depends on the host cell to replicate its genetic material and synthesize its proteins. Its genome can be either RNA or DNA and can be either single- or double-stranded.
